The almanac looks for days that list breaking ground or repairs as good and do not list them under avoid. Tradition says the best days also carry two or more lucky stars or the Open day officer. Days with Year Breaker, Month Breaker, Si Li, Si Jue or Yang Gong taboo status are left out, and so are days with the stars Tu Fu (Earth Mansion), Tu Fu (Earth Talisman) or Di Nang.
Breaking ground is one of the activities the Tong Shu lists as good (yi) or to avoid (ji) on each day. For renovation, this site accepts a day if either breaking ground or repairs is listed as good. The rule comes from the Xieji Bianfang Shu, a classical text on date selection, vol. 11.
The almanac rules out Year Breaker days, where the day clashes with the year, and Month Breaker days, where it clashes with the month. It also rules out Si Li days (the day before an equinox or solstice), Si Jue days (the day before a season begins) and Yang Gong's taboo days, which fall on fixed lunar dates. For renovation, days with the stars Tu Fu (Earth Mansion), Tu Fu (Earth Talisman) or Di Nang are skipped too.
The old books favor stars such as Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, Heavenly Pardon, Heavenly Wish, Monthly Grace, Four Ministers, Seasonal Virtue and Triple Harmony. The Union versions of Heavenly Virtue and Monthly Virtue count too. The favored day officer is the Open day. A day with two or more of these is rated Best, and otherwise Good.
