Here you can see the ten days the Chinese almanac rates highest for an engagement, each with its reason, and add a birthday to drop days that clash with someone's zodiac animal. Days the almanac rules out for any activity are already left off, so you can pick from what remains.
Going by the Chinese almanac, with the worst days removed, 8 days from Tue, Oct 27 to Fri, Dec 25 rate good or better. The nearest is Sun, Nov 1; the top pick is Wed, Nov 4.
Year Breaker and Month Breaker days, the day before each equinox, solstice and season start (Si Li and Si Jue), and Yang Gong’s taboo days are always removed. 6 days in this range were marked good for this but fell on one of them.
It also removes days that clash with that person’s Chinese zodiac animal. You can add several family members. Birthdays stay on this device.
The almanac must list engagements or engagement gifts as good for that day, and must not list them under avoid. In the Xieji Bianfang Shu, a classical text on date selection, the old books also favor days with lucky stars such as Heavenly Virtue, Monthly Virtue, Heavenly Joy and Triple Harmony. A day with two or more of those lucky stars or day officers is rated Best, and any other qualifying day is rated Good.
The almanac rules out Year Breaker days, Month Breaker days, Si Li days, Si Jue days and Yang Gong's taboo days for every activity. For an engagement it also rules out days with the star Ba Zhuan, which the old books warn against for this. The day of an equinox or solstice itself is skipped too.
Tradition points to the Yellow Path double-hours of the chosen day, in daytime only, between 5 am and 7 pm. This site suggests up to 3 of them and skips any double-hour that clashes with a person whose birthday you entered. Double-hours are two-hour periods, and the times follow your time zone.
Yes, the almanac keeps separate entries for each. For an engagement it looks for engagements or engagement gifts listed as good, and it applies its own extra rules, such as ruling out Ba Zhuan days. A day that suits a wedding is not automatically listed for an engagement.
In 2027 the almanac lists 36 days as Best and 49 as Good for engagements. Another 20 look good on paper but are ruled out, for example because of a breaker day or Ba Zhuan. These counts are for 2027 only and are not a rule for other years.
